Der Mantel<\/strong> (althochdeutsch mantal, von lateinisch mantellum \u201aH\u00fclle\u2018, \u201aDecke\u2018) ist ein der Jacke mit langen \u00c4rmeln \u00e4hnliches, mindestens knielanges Oberbekleidungsst\u00fcck. Der Gebrauch, ab welcher L\u00e4nge ein Teil als Mantel<\/strong> bezeichnet wird, ist jedoch von der Epoche und der Mode abh\u00e4ngig.<\/p>\n

Bis auf Sonderformen (Hausmantel, Bademantel usw.) wird er im Aussenbereich getragen, zum Beispiel als Wettermantel<\/strong> oder Wintermantel<\/strong>. Er ist das \u00e4usserste Kleidungsst\u00fcck, ausser eventuellen zus\u00e4tzlichen Accessoires wie etwa Schals.<\/p>\n

Einer der \u00e4ltesten arch\u00e4ologisch belegten M\u00e4ntel<\/strong> ist, neben seinem Pelzmantel, der f\u00fcnftausend Jahre alte Grasmantel der Gletscherleiche \u00d6tzi. Die feine und kunstfertige handwerkliche Ausf\u00fchrung dieses und anderer seiner Kleidungsst\u00fccke f\u00fchrten zu einer umfassenden Neubewertung der mitteleurop\u00e4ischen Kultur der Jungsteinzeit.<\/p>\n
